AP English Literature Course

I took this week long course to prepare myself for teaching AP English Literature in the Taft School, Connecticut, in the USA. In this very beautiful and scenic place, we were all very comfortable and relaxed. We took classes in the morning and afternoon in which we studied the AP requirements, we completed some sample examinations ourselves and then discussed the experience in order to better understand the students´ experience; we workshopped some AP level readings and discussed how we might go about teaching them. Finally, we spent some time thinking about our own syllabi: what texts we would like to teach and how we might group them. To finish, we shared our preliminary plans and offered advice and suggestions.

I gained a strong insight into the AP Literature course, how they define ´works of literary merit´ and the expectations that the College Board has for those students taking the AP examination in this subject. By completing sample examinations I gained valuable insight into the experience of being a student in an AP course and the demanding and exacting standards that they must meet. Through the discussions and rereads on the text Their Eyes Were Watching God I picked up a valuable teaching tool that has formed the basis of my teaching the subject here at Colegio Los Nogales this year.
This course was invaluable in preparing me for my job here, and I use things that I learned there on a daily basis in the classroom.
